Is that possible to make a simple modification of the 802.11g reference design to support 802.11a for operating in 5GHz?

We haven't tested this, but it should be possible. I can think of a few changes that would be required:
-The code for setting the RF interface center frequency currently supports only the 2.4GHz channels. Extending this to support 5GHz channels is straightforward.
-Probe response and beacon frames have a field for the node's center frequency. I'm not sure how 5GHz channels are encoded here (it's probably easy, we just haven't had a chance to built it). These frames may require additional tagged parameters when operating at 5GHz as well, to describe which sub-bands are supported. Capturing traffic from commercial devices in Wireshark is the quickest way to observe the expected contents of these packets.

FYI, I have managed to get the reference design to run on 5GHz. We only need to modify the IE of DS parameter set in the beacon/probe response frame.

That's great! Thanks for letting us know.
