Implementing roaming - is it possible

Hi,

I'd like to know, given your knowledge of how the access points work, if it's possible to do roaming for STAs by controlling only the APs. Say if a STA (eg. a phone) moves from one AP to another AP, is it possible to seamlessly move one connection to another?

Re: Implementing roaming - is it possible

There does exist the formal notion of an Extended Service Set (ESS) where multiple APs all form a larger network with a shared portal, but we haven't built anything like that into the Reference Design.

I'm not sure what your application is, but another thing to consider is that even without fancy enterprise management on the AP side, a smart STA will decide to "roam" to a better AP on its own. If you program two of our APs and leave both their SSIDs as "WARP-AP", an iPhone will seemlessly jump to whichever one gives it the better connection (presumably based on some receive power heuristic). Our STA design doesn't do this, but it would be straightforward to modify it to periodically perform an active scan and attempt to join any networks that seem like a better choice.
