Connecting two WARP boards via Coax cables

Hi,

How much attenuation we need to safely connect two WARP v3 boards or one WARP in a self-loop using a coax cable? (attenuation necessary to not damage the boards). Thanks.

Re: Connecting two WARP boards via Coax cables

It depends on your waveform and Tx power settings. We recommend a minimum of 30dB to avoid damage. 50+ dB is more realistic for modeling actual wirelss propagation (even 50dB emulates a high SNR reception; we use ~50dB attenuators when characterizing PHY performance at mid-to-high SNR).

I just want to take a copy from the signal. Do you think 40 dB of attenuation is enough (I have only 40 dB fixed attenuator)?

Re: Connecting two WARP boards via Coax cables

Yes, 40dB should be enough to avoid damage. Depending on the waveform you are sending, the reception will be very high power by normal over-the-air standards. For example, the 802.11 Reference Design defaults to a 15dBm transmission power, so the received signal will be approximately 15-40 = -25dBm.
