Roadmap

Hello

I realise this may be sensitive information but are you able to give some information regarding the future of the WARP 802.11 Reference Design. Specifically we would be interested to know:

- Do you intend to support the higher 802.11n modes above MCS 7, 65mbps.
- The PHY implies some basic 802.11ac support, will this be extended?
- Is there any chance of MIMO or Beamforming in future releases - This is of importance to our project
- Any other elaboration regarding the future of the project.

Hi,

We just released 802.11 Reference Design v1.7 for WARP v3. Most of the changes in v1.7 are in the C code, including many "under the hood" improvements to the MAC frameworks. This release also lays the groundwork for future ports of the 802.11 design for third-party hardware and the Xilinx Vivado tools (this is something we're working on in parallel and we plan to post more updates soon).

Regarding your specific questions,

Support for the two spatial stream MCS values (8-15) is on our immediate roadmap. I expect this to be the next major PHY feature we release. We don't have any specific plans for beamforming at this time, but it remains on the more distant to-do list.

The PHY currently can distinguish between DSSS (b), NONHT (g/a), HTMF (n), and VHT (ac) waveforms, but can only decode the first three. We intend to extend the design to support 802.11ac, but there are a few MAC things we need to add like aggregation before we can do that. This is on our roadmap.

The Vivado version of the 802.11 Ref Design works currently targeting hardware with Zynq + AD9361. We're currently working with a few customers on a pre-release version. We'll post updates to Mango's page (mangocomm.com) when the design is ready for general use. Please contact us (info@mangocomm.com) for more info.

Hi, is there any progress now? I intend to use 802.11 Ref Design with ZYNQ too.

Yes, we are currently working with a few customers on a pre-release version as a soft launch. Details of the design are posted here. Customers interested in the design should contact us for licensing costs and options.
