Is there a way to measure distance between nodes using RSSI of recieved packet?

The RSSI signal is proportional to instantaneous received power on a dB scale. In a line-of-sight channel with no multipath this could be mapped to a distance via a suitable propagation model (the Friis model being the simplest). However most wireless environments have more complicated propagation paths with multipath components which introduce random, time-varying channel coefficients (i.e. fading).
